Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY)

Supporting children and teens through emotional, social, and developmental challenges.

At Knox Therapy Center based in Knoxville, TN we specialize in EMDR and trauma therapy provided by qualified therapists. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an empirically researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences.

EMDR & trauma therapy

EMDR is different than most other therapeutic modalities because it does not require talking in detail about the distressing issue or completing homework between sessions. EMDR works to reduce symptoms of trauma by changing how memories are stored in the brain. In most cases, the brain naturally processes out disturbing experiences, however, in some cases, memories and experiences can become “stuck”, leading to unwanted psychological or physiological responses when we become triggered. EMDR allows for the brain’s natural healing response to be facilitated and completed through bilateral stimulation while the client is re-experiencing the trauma in the context of the safe environment of the therapist’s office.

Effective for treating:

  • PTSD

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Panic disorders

  • What to expect

During your sessions, you'll be seated comfortably while your therapist guides you through bilateral stimulation - typically using eye movements, gentle taps, or sounds. You'll remain fully awake and in control throughout the process.

Each session begins with establishing a safe environment. Your therapist will teach you grounding techniques to help you feel secure during processing. You can pause at any time using these learned coping skills.

While processing memories, you may notice changes in how you remember or feel about past experiences. Your therapist will support you through any emotions or insights that arise, always moving at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

Sessions typically last 60-90 minutes, and some processing may continue between appointments. Your therapist will work closely with you to ensure you feel supported throughout your healing journey.
